2009 Upper Great Lakes Regionals Championships Blog
October 17, 2008
Hey everyone....Trudy reporting in with all kinds of news. Tyler and Olivia are officially asleep! The Intermediate and Novice men and women were just fantastic - so much talent in one place was very exciting. Tyler skated a perfectly clean program in his final skate today and ended up 4th, earning him his third trip to Junior Nationals! Yeah!! The top four Int Men scored in the 50's!
Olivia skated her 3rd clean program of the week and happily ended up 18th out of 25 in the long and 19th overall. We are all very pleased with her. :)
News from Wyoming: For those of you who remember Samantha David's misfortune at Southwesterns last year that ended in the emergency room for stitches in her chin (courtesy of her last combination spin in the freeskate), you won't believe what happened this year. She is skating NW Pacifics in Jackson ,Wyoming as Southwesterns conflicted with her religious holiday. While on her Short Program warm-up yesterday, she lost her footing and smacked her head into the boards. She recovered quite nicely and went on to skate a very nice program...until the last spin....again! No stitches and no credit for the spin but a 3rd place finish in the short. Today was great with a 2nd place finish in the long to earn her 3rd place overall in Novice and a trip the Sectionals. Congratulations Sam!!
Uppers did not have a competitor party as Southwesterns does, so that was a little disappointing to the kids. So, we invited some friends to the hotel for a swim. Tyler and Olivia had a great time and hate to see these times with their friends come to an end. But, it won't last long - we leave for Sectionals in 3 weeks and we are back to work on Monday (Sunday is reserved for schoolwork).
We hope to have the battery and charger issues (borrowing Christine Broderick's) worked out by then so we can send more photos everyday that we are in Texas. Hope everyone has enjoyed the blog and we'll be back in a few weeks!

Skating at Uppers today was AMAZING! The day started with Intermediate Ladies Short Program - 25 skaters and only 2 falls! The group was amazing. Olivia skated clean except for a bobbled spin that ended up a Level 3 with negatives. She is in 20th going into the freeskate. Skaters with clean programs including double axels ended up in the teens for placements. Great Skating!! And it continued with Intermediate Men and Novice Ladies.
Tyler skated a phenomenal short..probably his best yet. He is in 6th. There are very few points separating most of these skaters, so it will all come down to the freeskates tomorrow. Again, there were only 2 falls in a group of 17 Intermediate Men. So great to see that many boys!
Kiri Baga skated a great short earning her 1st in Novice short. The top 3 had nice double axels and two triples (MaryBeth Marley and McKinzie Daniels were 2nd and 3rd respectively). Some beautiful triple/triples and triple axels from the Senior Men.
Tyler and I hope to see some great skating at Mids next month with all that we see here. Weather is getting colder. Will have lots a cool pictures tomorrow - since we won't have to go to bed early!
Good Night

Well it's Thursday and Tyler an I are both getting ready for Short Program tomorrow. Tyler practiced with most of the Intermediate Men today and they looked great but Tyler looked amazing! We have been keeping in touch with Samantha David while she is at her Regionals in Jackson Hole Wyoming. She skates her Short tomorrow night - my mom talks to her before and after her practices and has her event times scheduled into her phone. Good Luck Sam..we love you!
Again, we are missing Tyler this evening's blog session, but I am not going to go up against two feisty grandma's for his attention! His entourage arrived today. Today the Novice Ladies competed initial rounds. Pretty cool to watch. McKinzie Daniels makes triples look like singles. Osadolo Irowa won Senior Men Short with a huge triple axel. I am so excited for my friend Barbie Long - she won Juvenile Girls and is going to Junior National's...Lake Placid or Bust!!
We would have liked to stay through Junior Ladies Qualifying tonight but we have to get some sleep for tomorrow. Hopefully on Saturday we can all go swimming and stay up late!!
Bye for now

Hello from Minnesota again...This time it's Trudy and Olivia because Tyler is already asleep!!
(Olivia is dictating) Last week the leaves here were such awesome shades of yellow and red and the weather was in the high 70's...it was sooo beautiful. Well, the foliage is still beautiful but the winter weather we have been hearing about seems to be on it's way. It was in the low 40's and the rinks were pretty cold today.
We started the day with Ivy Pearson's (KCFSC) practice ice..she drove all the way from South Dakota this morning!! I think she got up at 2am...yuck! As luck would have it, Olivia and Ivy were in the same Intermediate group. Both skated well and Ivy ended up 14th and Olivia scored a personal best of 51.66, placing 3rd and moving on to final rounds. She says skating clean feels pretty good :)
They had lots of good friends in the stands. So many of the Intermediates were fantastic...they all loved hanging out together and cheering each other on!
Tyler's practice today was amazing....clean programs, great speed, great energy. Oh yeah and he performed on command for a new cell phone! His mom said 'clean 2A=new cell phone+texting'.....Done!! For those of you interested....Tyler can now text!!
Tomorrow Liv is going to watch some of the Novices while Tyler practices. They both skate Short on Friday morning and Long on Saturday. Tomorrow is mostly full of practices for us so we will try and take more photos and search around for good drama....Good Night from up North!

Trudy Oltmanns blogs from Richfield, Minnesota this week where KCFSC home club members Tyler Broderick, Olivia Oltmanns, and Ivy Pearson compete in the 2009 Upper Great Lakes (UGL) regional championships. This is the first installment of their week!
Well the first day of Uppers has ended with the Juvenile Girls putting out some great skates!
All the events are on one sheet so it's nice you don't have to miss any events. Tyler and I practiced at our own beautiful Dakotah rink today because we had no official ice at UGL.
We had great practices today and can't really decide whether we are more excited about Mids for pairs or Uppers for singles! We decided it was weird having Regionals where you live and that we needed a bit more atmosphere. So we went to Richfield and watched two groups of Juvenile....lots of talent!
I skate freeskate tomorrow and Tyler will be objectively reporting on how that went tomorrow night.
Schoolwork and teachers don't seem to realize this is Regionals week so we are both loaded with work.
The car jumped the curb, ran over the grass and down the sidewalk before it hit one of the rink employees' car before landing back into the parking lot! The police came and Sarah and I led them to the car that had eventually just been parked and left. Thankfully, Sarah was fine and skated her very first Regionals later in day.
Some of our friends from Chicago are going to practice with us at our rink tomorrow....we are looking forward to that. Way past our bedtimes so we'll check in again Wednesday...Skate Great Everyone!
